Spatial Statistics

Spatial Statistics involves the analysis of spatial patterns in data, which is an intrinsic aspect of the majority of data that MARIN works with. For example, we have applied cluster analysis to identify concentrations of incidents as shown in the first figure.


More advanced analyses demonstrate where the highest incident rates are located. The incident rate is calculated as the ratio of incidents to traffic volume. When the incident rates are compared, ‘hot spots’ become apparent. In this second figure, the darker red areas show these ‘hot spots’, the highest concentration of fishing incidents relative to the exposure, or number of trips.
