Events

There are many different types of events, or incidents, that occur in the maritime environment. Typically, these have a negative impact on people (injuries or death), property (to the vessel or other objects), and/or the environment (spills, sinking). Of particular concern to the Canadian Coast Guard’s SAR branch are the incidents that involve the endangerment of life at sea. Weather is a major contributor to incidents in a maritime environment and is therefore one key component to MARIN’s research.

Research of these events is conducted so that we can better understand the causes and consequences of such events, and develop better approaches for prevention or response of maritime incidents. The two major areas we study are Incidents and Weather Events.
