Private Recreational Boating Analysis

The MARIN group is working to create a spatial and temporal model of recreational boating in Canada. Incident rates based on SAR incidents will then be generated based on location and type of activity.

Data are being collected by various methods including surveys, direct observation, and expert opinion. A nationwide phone survey has been completed, as well as surveys at numerous boat shows across the country. These surveys give us information regarding the location, frequency, and type of recreational boating in Canada.

The figure on the right shows a sample of results from the nationwide telephone survey. Participants were asked to specify the types of boats owned in their household. The figure shows the proportion of each group of boat types owned by participants in each region of the country.

MARIN is currently planning additional surveys targeted at the recreational boating community. Once a comprehensive model of recreational boating traffic has been generated, incident data from SISAR will be introduced which will allow us to develop incident rates and evaluate risk factors.
