Lifeboat Station Placement

Establishing a new Canadian Coast Guard Lifeboat station is an expensive endeavour. Many criteria must be considered, such as proximity to maritime activities and high incident areas, physical suitability of port, distance to ancillary services, and local cost factors. This schematic shows that some criteria must be satisfied for a site to be an acceptable candidate solution, such as a minimum water depth at the wharf (if the water were too shallow the candidate site would be a 'No-Go'). For decision-making, weights can be applied to the remaining criteria based on their relative importance.

MARIS was used to calculate and illustrate measures of SAR response characteristics, as shown in the figure, to help rank the possible port locations according to average distance from incidents and the size of the coverage area amongst other things.
