Recreational Boating: Private

Recreational boating is, without a doubt, a popular activity among Canadians. It is estimated that
10 million Canadians participate in some form of recreational boating each year. Unfortunately, recreational boating accidents also account for many of the Coast Guard’s
Search and Rescue (SAR) incidents annually.

In order to properly target accident prevention programs and improve SAR planning, the Canadian Coast Guard needs to know more about the patterns of recreational boating in Canada.

The MARIN group is working to create a spatial and temporal model of recreational boating in Canada. Incident rates based on SAR incidents will then be generated based on location and type of activity.

Data is being collected by various methods including surveys, direct observation, and expert opinion. A nationwide phone survey has been completed, as well as surveys at numerous boat shows across the country. These surveys give us information regarding the location, frequency, and type of recreational boating in Canada.

Results of this project will assist prevention measures through a better understanding of critical factors as a function of exposure. This will help SAR planners and provide useful information for educating the public and groups associated with recreational boating.
