Passenger Vessels: Ferries

There is a significant amount of ferry traffic in Canada. Aside from route information available on nautical charts, very little information is in the public domain about the sheer volume of maritime traffic generated by ferry crossings. MARIN created a very accurate representation of the density and routing of ferry traffic for Eastern Canada by collecting the schedule of every ferry service, in additional to route information from nautical charts and expert opinion. This enabled MARIN to accurately assess ferry traffic both temporarily, and geographically. This figure shows the ferry traffic in Eastern Canada. The thickness of the lines is proportional to the density of traffic along each particular route.
