Passenger Vessels: Cruise Ships

The cruise ship industry has become a growing component of the Canadian tourism industry. Since 1988, Vancouver has hosted over 7 million passengers that have contributed significant economic benefits to the city and the surrounding area. On the other coast, Halifax has witnessed in excess of 725,000 passengers sail through its port. Likewise ports such as Saint John, NB, Sydney, NS, St John's and Corner Brook, NL, Montreal, QC, and Charlottetown, PE have benefited from this new tourism market.

As with any industry there are risks. Some of these risks are associated with characteristics of the industry such as large capital investments, and the operation of complex engineered systems in an environment that can be uncertain in terms of weather, navigation, maritime traffic and sea conditions.

At MARIN, we apply advanced risk management techniques to identify risk issues and factors in order for ports or emergency response organizations, such as the Canadian Coast Guard, to develop preventative measures and formulate risk response and mitigation strategies.
