Commercial Fishing

The commercial fishing industry is major economic component in Canada’s coastal regions. As such, the influence of commercial fishing traffic on the maritime activity in these areas is significant. Furthermore, the nature of the activity makes commercial fishing extremely hazardous. The use complex and heavy machinery yields a high risk of accidents on board the vessel. In addition, economic pressures compel fisherman to overload their vessels and venture out in weather conditions where they otherwise wouldn’t.

The MARIN team is working to model the location and quantity of commercial fishing traffic on a seasonal basis to identify high traffic areas and seasonal fluctuations. We are comparing this information to incident data to identify high-risk areas and times of year, and determine significant risk factors that lead to accidents.
