Aquaculture

Aquaculture involves systematic farming of aquatic organisms, which include fish, shellfish and aquatic plants. Commercial aquaculture in Canada began in 1970’s and has rapidly grown into a multi-million dollar industry (Office of the Commissioner for Aquaculture Development, 2002). Common aquaculture species in Maritime Canada include oysters, clams, mussels, scallops, cod, trout and salmon.

Aquaculture sites can be ocean-based (either in the open ocean, rivers or lakes), or land-based. Ocean-based sites require frequent monitoring by vessels from stations on land. The vessel traffic generated by aquaculture operations is unique in the types of vessels used, activities, routes, and risks MARIN is working to model this traffic both spatially and temporally and identify significant risk factors associated with this activity.
